The Jacksonville Police Department, and surrounding agencies, are offering the Citizen’s Police Academy Class #28 to members of Morgan County. The goal of the Citizen’s Police Academy is to not only help the local residents better understand police work in their community, but also to develop stronger ties between the community and their police agencies. It is through community cooperation and planning that we can best ensure quality police services in an organized and effective crime prevention program.
The academy is a 12-week program, which concludes with a graduation dinner during the last week of the program. The program classes are held on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., starting February 6, 2024, with graduation on April 30, 2024. Classes will be held at the Jacksonville Municipal Building, 200 West Douglas in Jacksonville, with occasional alternative locations that will be announced. Each evening of instruction will cover different aspects of the law enforcement profession.
Jacksonville area law enforcement personnel will present the instruction during the Citizen’s Police Academy with an occasional outside speaker. Some of the relevant topics that will be covered are: Criminal Code, Vehicle Code, DUI enforcement, Firearms, Domestic Battery and Use of Force. There will be hands-on training as well as simulated practical situations for the students to get a first-hand experience of law enforcement.
There will be a graduation dinner at the completion of the program and certificates issued to those who have met all requirements. Students must attend 9 out of the 12 weekly classes to successfully complete the program. The academy is a free program for anyone 21 years of age or older that resides or works in Morgan County.
