Morgan County CASA new volunteer sworn in:
Morgan County CASA, a program of Advocacy Network for Children, recently swore in a new CASA volunteer. Christina Butler was sworn in on Thursday, September 12, by Judge Jeffery Tobin at the Morgan County Courthouse.
CASA volunteers are trained community volunteers appointed by a judge to speak up for abused or neglected children in the court system. Volunteers receive 30 hours of virtual and on-line training which includes courtroom procedures, working with social service agencies and the special needs of abused and neglected children. The trained volunteer will represent abused and neglected children in the Morgan County court system.

Morgan County Democrats offering transportation for voting:
The Morgan County Democrats are offering transportation for (1) registering to vote and (2) early voting in the Primary Election.
Anyone needing transportation assistance can call Peggy Howlett at 217-370-0948 to schedule.
Registering to vote in-person requires TWO forms of identification, with at least one showing your current resident address. They include: driver’s license, employee ID card, student ID car, library car, insurance card, Selective Service card, Civil Membership card, utility bill, checkbook and piece of mail.
Sunrise Rotary to hold Business After Hours:
The Jacksonville Sunrise Rotary Club announces a special Business After Hours to help begin the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the club’s chartering. Working with the Jacksonville Area Chamber of Commerce, the celebration will kick off at K’s Creek golf club on Sandusky Road, in Jacksonville, on Thursday, September 26, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. The informal social gathering will be accompanied by light hors d’oeuvres, displays highlighting the club’s last three decades of service, fun activities and a cash bar.
“We thought the community might want to know who the Sunrise Rotarians are, and make their acquaintance,” said club president Mary Jane Hauser. “You might be surprised to find out who is among our membership.”
Jacksonville Sunrise Rotary Club was chartered on December 14, 1994 as a new club in Rotary District 6460, and remains a strong club among the more than 48,000 clubs of Rotary International, and 1.4 million Rotarians, worldwide.
Jacksonville Memorial Hospital’s Walking for Wellness at JHS Bowl Returns Oct. 15:
Walking for Wellness, the indoor walking program sponsored by Jacksonville Memorial Hospital, returns for another season of exercise and camaraderie beginning on Tuesday, Oct. 15.
The Walking for Wellness program at The JHS Bowl, 215 S. Church St., provides a safe place to walk when weather conditions make walking outside unpleasant or dangerous. The walking program will run until April 11, 2025.
Walkers can head to The JHS Bowl from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day Jacksonville School District 117 is in session. The program is closed during school holidays, including Thanksgiving and Christmas vacation, and any day school is not in session.
An average of 75 people walk at The JHS Bowl each day the program is open. Participation in Walking for Wellness is free. Registration is not required. Walkers will be asked to check in and out.

Dead people – you can’t live with them, and you can’t live without them. Join John Lynn as he searches for dead people in all the right places. This “underground” presentation explores hundreds of Illinois cemeteries to find interesting graves and headstones, intriguing lives and deaths, and lots and “plots” of funny names. It’s an opportunity for mortals to not only whistle past the graveyard, but to pause and enjoy the oddities of life and death while we’re still on the right side of history. Dailey as he offers advice to up and coming writers and poets, as well as discusses the books he has written, including The Story of Gunnar Hansen, a beautifully spun tale of loss and survival. John C. Dailey is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and the University of Illinois College of Medicine. After serving two years in the Navy, he completed his Residency at the University of Wisconsin. He practiced as an ear, nose and throat physician for over 20 years before retiring. He and his wife live in Jacksonville, Illinois.

“The Land and the People Hold Memories” program to be held:
A program, “The Land the People Hold Memories” with Dr. John Hallwas will be held at the Jacksonville Public Library, 201 W. College Ave., at 6 p.m. on October 21. Admission is free.
A writer, speaker, and adult-education leader, John E. Hallwas is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Western Illinois University. Dr. Hallwas will share with the patrons of the Jacksonville Public Library an overview of the Illinois State Historical Society’s Memoir Project which helps to foster historical understanding, appreciation for local experiences, and meaningful belonging.

Climate change presentation to be held:
The West Central Illinois Council on World Affairs announces that Dr. Trent Ford, Illinois State Climatologist, will present a program on climate change on Tuesday, September 24 at 7 p.m. at Crispin Hall, room 220, on the campus of Illinois College. The public is invited. There is no charge.
Dr. Ford is an expert in climate change. For the State if Illinois, Ford leads climate and drought monitoring, research, and data collection. He has been with the Prairie Research Institute at the University of Illinois since 2019. His program will focus on the complex and multi-faceted problem of climate change. He will also focus on solutions and the role of individuals in making communities healthier and more resilient to climate change.
Crispin Hall is located on West College Avenue in Jacksonville and is handicap accessible.
The West Central Illinois Council of World Affairs has been providing programs to the Jacksonville community regularly since its incorporation in 1982. The Council is an Illinois not-for-profit tax-exempt corporation. The Council will be presenting additional programs during the 2024-25 academic year.
Hampton Inn and Prairieland United Way partner on 10 for $10 on 10/10 Breakfast To Go! fundraiser:
The Hampton Inn and Prairieland United Way have partnered for a Drive Thru Breakfast, on Thursday, October 10th with all proceeds going towards the 2024 Just Imagine Campaign. The event will be held at Hampton Inn, located at 1725 W. Morton Road, Jacksonville, beginning at 6:00 am and ending at 9:00 am.
For $10, you will receive a “breakfast to go” that includes 10 items: breakfast foods, snacks, drinks and newspapers. Breakfast will be distributed as a “Drive-Thru Breakfast” under the Jacksonville Hampton Inn awning. Pull in under the awning and remain in your car, and we’ll hand your breakfast to you. Exit the Hampton Inn by driving around the back of the building then exiting back on Morton. There are “surprises” in random bags including Chamber Checks and Gift Cards to area businesses. Only 300 breakfast bags will be available, distributed by first-come, first-served basis. Cash and checks only will be accepted.
