Tiffany Hickox named IHSA Spirit/Dance Coach of the Year:
Jacksonville High School is pleased to announce that the IHSA has selected Jacksonville J’ette head coach Tiffany Hickox as the 2023-2024 Spirit/Dance Coach of the Year. Hickox, a 1994 JHS graduate and former J’ette, is entering her 25th year as the head coach of the program. She has carried on the tradition of J’ette excellence.
The J’ettes have won numerous IDTA state championships in many categories. Since the J’ettes began competing in competitive dance category for the IHSA, the squad has qualified for IHSA state in all seven years under the stewardship of Coach Hickox. During that time the team has won five Class lA IHSA sectional titles and are the back to back IHSA Class lA state champions. Coach Hickox has done an outstanding job teaching her squad that a good work ethic, determination and quality sportsmanship will help you reach your goals. The life lessons that these young student athletes learn have helped and will help them in whatever future endeavors they are involved with.
We congratulate Coach Tiffany Hickox for all of her dedication to the program and hard work leading to this prestigious honor!
Jacksonville Street Department announces 2024 Leaf Pickup:
The 2024 Leaf Pickup will start November 1 and continue through the end of November. All bagged leaves must be curbside by 8 a.m. Bags can be paper or plastic. Leaves MUST be in bags.
Memorial Health Hospitals to provide free mammograms:
Free breast cancer screenings will be available at all five Memorial Health hospitals during October for women age 40 and older who are uninsured or underinsured. The free screenings are part of Memorial’s annual Mammogram Mondays program, held during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Appointments are required; no walk-ins are available. Educational materials will be available, including information on general breast health and how to perform breast self-exams.

The American College of Radiology and Society of Breast Imaging recommend all women 40 years of age and older have screening mammograms annually. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women in the United States. Early detection is key.
LLCC-Jacksonville to host FAFSA and program Q&A events Oct. 16:
Lincoln Land Community College in Jacksonville, located at 32 N. Central Park Plaza, will host a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) completion event and Q&A sessions to learn more about getting started at LLCC on Wednesday, Oct. 16. The events are free and open to prospective students and family members.
Families who would like assistance completing the FAFSA can schedule a 30-minute appointment between 2-6 p.m. (last appointment at 5:30 p.m.) to meet with an LLCC financial aid professional.
Prospective students can learn more about getting started at LLCC during 45-minute Q&A sessions. For students who are undecided on their major, sessions will be held at 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. Sessions for those interested in workforce or health care careers will take place at 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. LLCC professionals will also be available to assist with completion of the online application and next steps.

Safe Sitter Course offered at Jacksonville Memorial Hospital in November:
A popular babysitting skills program for participants ages 11 to 15 is returning to Jacksonville Memorial Hospital. A Safe Sitter course will be offered Tuesday, Nov. 5, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. with registration open at 8:30 a.m. The class is aimed at giving preteens and teens the confidence to be effective, safe babysitters.
Cost is $35 and includes training on lifesaving skills to use when someone is choking, plus a workbook and lunch. During class, the students will use manikins for skill work. There will also be role playing, games and activities as the students learn how to handle everyday situations that could present a risk to children’s safety, including what to do when severe weather occurs.
A demonstration for parents will be held at 2:15 p.m. where students will share some of the skills they’ve learned in the class.

Stock named September Colleague of the Month for Jacksonville Memorial Hospital:
Matthew Stock, a registered nurse in Emergency Services at Jacksonville Memorial Hospital, is the nonprofit hospital’s September Colleague of the Month.
Stock was nominated by an appreciative family member for the care he provided in the Emergency Department.
“Matthew is always an advocate for his patients and their family members,” the patient’s spouse wrote. “He ensures they understand the course of care to be taken, are involved in making decisions and treats them with respect, compassion and understanding. He is an exemplary nurse.”
Stock has worked for Jacksonville Memorial Hospital since 2013.
Notice from Morgan County Housing Authority: The Morgan County Housing Authority will be accepting applications for the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program beginning on October 10, 2024. Applications will be accepted Monday – Friday between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the MCHA office located at 211 S Fayette St., Jacksonville, Illinois.
The following conditions apply:
- Applicants must appear in person.
- Applications will not be mailed.
- INCOMPLETE applications will not be accepted.
- Completed applications will be placed on the Section 8 HCV Waiting list in the order they are received.
