A bird banding event sponsored by the Morgan County Audubon Society was held the morning of February 7 at the home of MCAS members Pat and Barb Ward. In this photo, Natalia Maass, right, instructs Elizabeth Lepper as to how to safely help her release a Northern Flicker after it had been banded. According to audubon.org, “Bird banding is a tool used by researchers and conservationists to monitor and uncover the secret aspects of the life cycles of birds that can be crucial to protecting populations across the world. In a nutshell, it consists of capturing, measuring, and marking wild birds.”
