Big Brothers Big Sisters

Big Brothers Big Sisters is the nation’s oldest one-to-one youth mentoring non-profit service organization that provides ongoing supportive services to children in need of a mentor. Volunteers are recruited from within the community and are fully screened by our professional staff members. We then match the volunteer with a child and provide extensive supervision and support on an ongoing basis to ensure the success of the match.

Our agency, Big Brothers Big Sisters of West Central Illinois, was founded in 1961 and covers seven counties: Adams, Brown, Cass, Morgan, Pike, Schuyler, and Scott. We currently host community-based matches as well as site-based programs, which are conducted in coordination with a school or community site. With these site-based programs we utilize volunteers ages 16 and up.

The mission of the organization is to provide extra support outside of the school and home, helping to provide equal footing for all kids to be as successful as they can be. Not every kid comes from the healthiest home environment and not all have the best luck at building relationships in school. Our programs provide a structured environment that allows social and emotional growth to take place. We’ve been successful in doing this, too. Our impact shows it:

  • 94 % improved in their attitudes towards risky behavior
  • 88 % maintained or improved in parental trust
  • 85 % maintained or improved in their educational expectations
  • 83 % improved in scholastic competence
  • 83 % improved in social acceptance

We don’t use any state or federal funding for our programs. Instead, our work is supported through grants, fundraisers, and private donations. We are supported by the communities we do our work in. One of our Bigs of the Year, Matt Wright understands this, saying “I think Big Brothers Big Sisters helps individuals understand how crucial mentoring is for the littles. It also will give someone a different view on school and life. Overall, the bigs [mentors] benefits just as much as littles [mentees] do.”

We’re a proactive organization. We’re here to help the kids now, so that they can help themselves be the best they can be in the future.
