John Lambie, Tim Megginson and Jerry Lowe celebrated the 248th birthday of the United States Marine Corps on Friday, Nov. 10 at Scott County Nursing Center in Winchester. Lowe was presented with the John A Lejeune message along with the Current Commandants letter to the Corps. Also, in keeping with tradition, the oldest and youngest Marine in the room cut the cake together. Some of Lowe’s family members were also present for the celebration.

Lowe, who will be turning 98 in January 2024, was a World War II veteran drafted into the Marine Corps in 1944, where he was with the 5th Marine Division, 5th medical battalion, Company C.

Lowe served 2 ½ years, got out and then went back in during the Korean War for three years. Lowe began as an ambulance driver but also trained as a field cook, among a few other jobs where help was needed.
