Hazardous Household Waste Event

The Morgan County Emergency Management Office and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency teamed up to provide an outlet for unwanted Hazardous Household Waste. The event, held at the end of May at the Morgan County Fairgrounds served close to 500 families and cost over fifty thousand dollars. David Saladino of the Illinois EPA was pleased with the turnout. “These numbers are right in line with what we expect from a community of this size.” These cost prohibitive events are not held on a regular basis any longer, causing people to store unwanted waste items in their homes and garages. The EPA works with local co-sponsors such as the local emergency management office. The local office is only responsible for logistic costs such as food and location. The Morgan County Fairgrounds was donated by the Morgan County Fair Board and the Jacksonville Citizens Police Academy also provided volunteer assistance. Phil McCarty from Morgan County stated, “These co-sponsored events are great for our community. We are able to work with the Illinois EPA and provide a great service to our community. We hope to do this again in the future.”
