Health with the Hamels : Healthy ideas for eating fish

By Clara and Justin Hamel

It is that time of year again—the Lenten season. Even for those who do not embrace the Catholic faith, this period can be a season of reflection, community gatherings, fish fries and familiar traditions.

During this time, many of us look forward to Friday night meals filled with crispy baskets of fish, fries and other comfort foods. While tradition has its place, it can also be a great opportunity to explore nourishing alternatives that fill your bodies needs and leave you feeling energized and refreshed, versus heavy and sluggish.

Fish is an incredibly healthy protein. Its abundance of omega-3 fatty acids makes it a cornerstone of a heart healthy, anti-inflammatory diet. Fish also provides many essential nutrients that are critical to brain and nerve health. However, not all means of preparation are created equally, and the health benefits of fish are often lost in a vat of deep fried oil. So, instead of heavy breading and deep frying, consider methods that enhance flavor while supporting digestion, heart health and overall wellness.

Healthier fish certainly does not mean less flavor. By utilizing vibrant, flavorful ingredients you can boost the health factor while maintaining all the tastiness. Check out the attached recipes for two healthy, delicious alternatives that not only support wellness but also fill bellies with a healthful, satisfying meal.

Each of these delicious main courses can be served with a large salad and roasted veggies to round out a healthy, delicious meal.
