This week is busy in terms of music. There’s nothing better than fall weather, a good beverage and some great tunes.
As I mentioned in last week’s column, country singer-songwriter Sunny Sweeney makes a return to Twisted Tree Music Hall on Thursday, September 4. Don’t miss it. She’s supporting her new album, Rhinestone Requiem, that was released last month.
Friday, September 5 gets busy down in Greene County this week. It’s the annual Greene County Days, a long tradition of yard sales, arts, crafts and music. Area band Whiskey Driven kicks off the music on the Roodhouse Square starting at 11 a.m. They will be followed by up-and-coming singer-songwriter from Hillsboro, Lauryn Miller, from 5:30-8 p.m. If going south out of Jacksonville is not your thing, head north to our friends in Arenzville for a fun-filled weekend at the Arenzville Burgoo. Jobe & Woody will entertain with an acoustic set at the burgoo while AJ’s Bar & Grill will host Whiskey Driven for an evening set. Boy, that band sure gets around!
Saturday, September 6 is equally busy. Greene County band Midwest Avenue will entertain in Roodhouse during the day for Greene County Days. Then, it’s over to the Arenzville Burgoo again where Triopia graduate and now a Nashville-based singer-songwriter Elisabeth Ann Werries opens for 90s country band Ricochet. You might remember their self-titled album from 1996 that produced three Top 10 country hits including “Daddy’s Money” and “Love is Stronger than Pride.” Lead vocalist Heath Wright is the only remaining original member still touring. After the burgoo stage is done, head back on over to AJ’s as Backwoods Burden takes the stage at 9 p.m. If you want to stick close to Jacksonville, Twisted Tree is hosting local rock band Captain Quirk. They do a host of familiar covers that should keep toes tapping all night.
If you still have any energy left, a Sunday matinee at Patriot’s Pub in Waverly has Hippies of the Heartland hosting HippieFest starting at 2 p.m.
