As a proud grandmother, it touched my heart that for someone so young, Olamide’s actions stand out as a powerful example of maturity and patriotism.
At just 12 years old, he shows the kind of initiative and respect that many adults could admire. In a time when simple values can sometimes be overlooked, his decision serves as a reminder that true patriotism isn’t defined by age, it’s defined by heart, responsibility and action.
When I asked my 12-year-old grandson Olamide Ajayi to tell me about the flag that he found, this was his response:
“So, we were recently cleaning out a house, and we were looking in the garage. I found a torn up American flag, and there was a flag pole out in the front.I remembered that with an American flag, you can’t fly it when it is torn. Later in the day, we found a sewing box, and I’m like, ‘I want to repair the flag!’ So, I took the sewing box and started stitching it. I’m not the best sewer, so the stitches were a little uneven, but … I stitched it up and I put out the American flag at the end of the day. It looked pretty good!”
