Born and raised in Alton, Illinois, Jeff Mossman went to Illinois Wesleyan University and in 1995 was hired by state farm to work claims right there Bloomington. “I knew I wanted to be a State Farm agent early on from seeing it in my family,” says Mossman. “I was eventually able to apply and be selected for the Jacksonville opportunity in late 1999, and took over for Don Hazelrigg, who was a long-time State Farm Agent here. Now I’ve been here for 20 years.” Mossman Insurance and Financial Services Inc. began business April 1, 2000.
“I currently have a licensed team of four, including Chris Ator, who has been with me for 19 of my 20 years, she is my office manager; Joe Follis, who is a licensed insurance advisor; Lisa Cully, who is our administrative assistant and my wife Amy, works part-time for the team.” Mossman says of his family, “Amy and I have been married for 14 years and we have four active boys. Jacksonville has been our home and we enjoy raising our family here.”
“I’m a third-generation State Farm Agent,” Mossman says appreciatively. All have served State Farm Insurance in Illinois. “My family showed me what it means to have a strong work ethic and also how important it is to serve the community. My grandfather was a State Farm Agent in Calhoun County (Brussels) for 30 years. My dad is retiring from a 40-year State Farm career this December, his agency is in Wood River. I feel enormously proud of that and feel connected to my grandfather, who has since passed away, in that regard. I am also grateful for all that my dad taught me along the way and continues to teach me and to be able to kind of ‘carry the torch’ so to speak.”
“The Agency is going strong,” adds Mossman thankfully. “I feel like I am a little less than half-way into my career and, God willing, I’d like to work another 20-25 years doing what I love. Being able to help people in their time of need is a passion of mine and a passion for my team. Insurance is such a factor in people’s lives especially when something goes wrong; ranging from a door ding in a parking lot to the most devastating situations a family could possibly endure. We are involved with all aspects of our customer’s insurance needs and, in that way, their lives. And we take great pride and have great passion in being there for people in their worst of times.”
Mossman and his team try to walk their clients through every element of the insurance process. The agency specialties include auto, home and life insurance, renter’s insurance, financial services and business insurance. Health insurance services and life insurance services fall under the financial planning category of the business.
“Of course, our team also likes to have a lot of fun with it along the way too,” continues Mossman sentimentally. “We build relationships and we have wonderful customers. This community is our family, and, therefore, it is important to us to treat each of our customers as if they are our family also.”
Mossman is incredibly involved with his kids’ schools, activities and sports. He is a past Routt/Our Saviour Dreams committee chairman. And, taking a lesson from his father and grandfather’s examples, he is fully engaged in the community including being an active member in the Jacksonville Area Chamber of Commerce and the Jacksonville Area Noon Lion’s Club.
“I passionately believe in supporting local business every chance I get,” affirms Mossman. “My team and I, as a whole, firmly believe in shopping locally and supporting our community and investing in our community.”
About the stressful times we are in today, Mossman expresses what all of us feel today. “We’re navigating these waters during the pandemic and getting used to this different way of life,” he says. “Hopefully, things will get back to normal soon.” Mossman Insurance and Financial Services Inc., 1103 West Morton Avenue, continues to be open for business during the shelter-at-home order, although their lobby is currently closed to comply with social distancing. Mossman and Cully, his office manager, come in daily to be there for customers when needs and lives happen, and so people can speak to someone over the phone. Additionally, the other team members are working remotely from home to meet the needs of present and future clients.
“Life continues,” Mossman points out. “The things that we do for our clients, those things never stop. The car accidents, the fires, etcetera, happen regardless of what is happening with the pandemic, so we need to be here.”
Mossman gratefully acknowledges the past 20 years by saying, “I would like to say ‘thank you’ to my team that invests their time and takes pride in their careers here. And also express gratitude to our Jacksonville and Morgan County area clients that continue to depend on us. We couldn’t be more thankful or excited to come to work every day for that reason, for them! And we would like to say thank you for the last 20 years and look forward to at least 20 more!”
