Spring sports off to a cold, wet start in Central Illinois
JHS, Routt reschedule for weather, IC hits some highlights
It was early April in all sorts of ways on the athletics fields this past week in Jacksonville. Routt Catholic High School and Jacksonville High School had rescheduled meets and games throughout the week due to the cold, rainy weather.
Illinois College had the highlights this week. Illinois College’s Charlie Lardi and Andrew Wieneke combined to toss a no-hitter and helped the Blueboys to a split with Knox College in Galesburg on Saturday, April 5. The Prairie Fire opened the day with a 5-3 win before IC came back to take the nightcap, 2-1. The Blueboys dropped the rubber match on Sunday, April 6 with the Prairie Fire scoring a big second inning, plating all six of their runs in the game en route to a 6-2 win.
Meanwhile, back home on the track field, sophomore Dylan Doss put on a show at the True Blue Invite at soggy England Stadium on Friday, April 4. Doss, an indoor all-American in the 200 meters, uncorked the nation’s fastest time in the outdoor version of the 200, roaring to a time of 20.93 seconds. That mark was also a school and stadium record.
Doss also won the 100 meters with a time of 10.38 seconds, a school and stadium record. Adam Hernandez and Devin Boggs were IC’s other winners. Hernandez broke the tape in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.23 seconds, while Boggs was victorious in the steeple chase in 10:18.39.
On the women’s side, Aleese Trimingham and Haley Garrett were both double winners. Trimingham was victorious in the 100-meter (14.87 seconds) and 400-meter (1:07.19) hurdles, while Garrett brought home titles in the 100 meters (12.43 seconds) and 200 meters (25.60 seconds).
