South Jax reels after severe weather

  • Windows were broken and a bay door split in half at the South Jacksonville Fire Station.
  • Winds damaged a fence inside the Ameren electrical substation on Vandalia Road north of the South Jacksonville Fire Station.
  • Allan Ramos, of Jacksonville, and other members of a Green Works crew clear downed tree limbs at the home of Richard and Margaret Smith on Hamilton Drive.
  • Tamaque Ator, of Waverly, packs up family photos at her in-law’s home on Vandalia Road and Linden Street. Sharon and Richard Ator were in their living room when the storm hit, ripping off the roof. Family members were helping pack up personal items during the day Monday.
  • Ameren’s Josh Simpson (left) and Cody Force, both of Decatur, labor on replacing a power pole at Dewey Drive and West Street.
  • Several cars were crushed by falling trees in the Labor Drive development.
  • The north wall of City Church on Vandalia Road was damaged by Sunday’s storm.
  • Mickie Clark (right) gets help clearing downed tree limbs in her front yard from friend Dusty Duffie, of South Jacksonville, and mother April Clark, of Jacksonville, Monday afternoon. Mickie said she and her partner Matt Brown were home Sunday night and heard a mobile phone alert of a storm in Chapin. Soon they heard the sound of a freight train and rushed to get their children in the basement, and tried to get their pets, too. They saw sparks flying outside as branches battered the exterior of the house. She said her yard and drive were completely covered with tree debris, but luckily their house was not damaged.
