‘Unite for Good’ spotlights those making a positive impact in our community

It was as hot as the Fourth of July. People lined the streets on Friday, July 4 in spite of the heat to catch candy and watch the parade sponsored by The Rotary Club of Jacksonville. Because of construction on West State Street near the downtown square in Jacksonville, the end point of the parade was at Church Street.
This year’s theme was “Unite for Good,” to celebrate those doing good in the community. Over 80 entries took part in the parade, including a record-breaking turnout of area Shriners. Tony Moore of Jacksonville currently serves as potentate of Ansar Shrine in Springfield. With an open invitation to the state’s Shriners, more than 10 groups from the area signed up to walk in the parade. This year’s parade marshal was the executive director of the Prairieland United Way, Karen Walker.
It was a complete celebration all day in Jacksonville, too. The day began bright and early with the CNB Bank and Trust Independence Day 5K Run, Walk and Fun Run at Nichols Park at 6:30 a.m. After the parade, there was a flag raising ceremony at noon at the American Legion on West Superior Avenue that was conducted by the area’s veteran service organizations.
The evening was topped off by a patriotic concert that also was in celebration of the City of Jacksonville’s bicentennial; the concert was performed by the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra in Nichols Park prior to the fireworks display.
