Wade and Dowland turns 60

Wade and Dowland turns 60

by Eric A. Thomas

Harry Dowland and Merle Wade teamed up in 1961 to purchase Davis Office Supply, a business supply store in Jacksonville. They were located at 221 West State St. and opened on January 6 of that year under the new name Wade & Dowland.

The business relocated to its current location in 1976. After working for them from 1975 to 1982, Steve Quigg teamed up with his father Jim to purchase the business. Quigg became sole owner in 2000 and his wife Kelly assists him in running the business today. Wade & Dowland Office Equipment, Inc. (W&D) has become the go-to destination for office supplies and equipment for many in a 60-mile radius.

“Customers and products have changed vastly over the years,” reminisced owner Quigg. “Once we dealt with typewriters and checkwriters and now it is printers and copiers.” Many printed products, such as calendars, were among the big items back in the day but with the advent of many personal devices such as cell phones and iPads and many apps, the need for those items has decreased. As technology has changed W&D has stayed on top of offering its customers the latest and greatest.

Furniture and equipment selections for offices have taken the staff at Wade & Dowland to new levels of service to their customer base. “We have completed many new and old offices within our service area with the best of furnishings, equipment and supplies,” commented Quigg. They offer equipment from some of the most trusted brands in the business today including Canon, Victor, Monroe and Sharp among others. Anything you need to run your business: phones, cash registers, copiers, printers, copy paper, scanners, desks, desk accessories, envelopes, chairs, room partitions and more are available through Wade & Dowland. “We appreciate the loyalty of our customers and look forward to continuing to offer personal service that is only available when you shop local,” concluded Quigg.

The 60-mile service area includes Calhoun, Jersey, Greene, Scott, Menard, Pike, Brown, Macoupin, Mason and Morgan. Within this 10-county area, a W&D salesman calls on their customer base once a week and delivery of any needs happens the next week. The regular clientele they service ranges from 350 to 375 businesses and professional organizations. They even provide a full-time technician that services all the machinery purchased by their customers. In addition to the Quiggs, they are very fortunate to have longevity among their staff. Three employees have over 30 years each with the company.

Because of the current pandemic, no celebrations are being planned. At the beginning of the pandemic, W&D closed to the public for the first 30 days while they took the needed measures to safely reopen. When making their service calls and deliveries they always make sure to wear masks.
