Huffman takes helm at Jacksonville hospital

Dr. Scott Boston, president and CEO of Jacksonville Memorial Hospital (JMH), plans to resign from the role effective Feb. 28, 2023, to resume practicing medicine.

The JMH Board of Directors has approved the appointment of Trevor Huffman, currently director of Ambulatory Services at the nonprofit hospital, as Boston’s successor.

Prior to taking on the role of CEO, Boston was medical director of the JMH Emergency Department from 2012 to 2015 and assistant medical director of the emergency department at Springfield Memorial Hospital from 2011 to 2013. He first joined the medical staff at JMH in 2004.

Boston said he plans to use his skills as a board-certified emergency medicine physician in a clinical or academic capacity.

“I’m grateful for the time I’ve spent as leader of JMH and proud of all we’ve achieved together,” Boston said. “It’s been an honor to work alongside so many talented health care professionals, all with the same commitment to serving Jacksonville and Morgan County.”

“Under Dr. Boston’s leadership, JMH has successfully managed multiple surges of the COVID-19 pandemic, and adopted a new brand logo and naming identity. Dr. Boston has enhanced hospital operations, and has been a leader for rural community health,” said Charles Callahan, PhD, president of the Memorial Health Hospital Group. “He has served with distinction during these extraordinary times and we wish him the best going forward.”

Huffman, whose career at JMH began in 1998 as coordinator of outreach services, has led the hospital’s Rehabilitation Services and became director of Ambulatory Services in 2019.

“Trevor Huffman has many years of experience not only as a leader, but as a provider of patient care,” Callahan said. “He has not only a decades-long commitment to the well-being of the community, but also the perspective and expertise to lead JMH today and in the years to come.”

Huffman earned a Bachelor of Science degree in physical therapy from Maryville University in 1994, followed by a Master of Science degree in health and physical education with an athletic training sequence from Illinois State University in 1996. He graduated with an executive Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Missouri, Columbia, in 2020. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.

“I have had great examples of leadership over the past 25 years, including Dr. Boston,” Huffman said. “His leadership through the pandemic was lifesaving. I hope to continue the successes we have shared over the past few years, optimize our abilities as a critical access hospital and continue to grow to meet our mission.”

He and his wife, Monica, live in rural Jacksonville and have five children. He serves on the board of directors for the Prairieland United Way.

“Trevor Huffman has a long history of service to JMH and our community,” said Maryjane Bradbury, chair of the JMH Board of Directors. “I’m confident he is the best leader to continue our work to improve the health of the people and communities we serve.”
