However, there was an even larger amount of love for animals. The Protecting Animal Welfare Society Inc. (P.A.W.S.) held their annual Dog Gone Fun-raiser, a fundraiser for the organization, recently. Despite the sweltering high temperatures, nearly $8,000 was raised which will help in paying for the care of the animals and upkeep of the animal shelter. A special water station was set up to help alleviate some of the heat. The afternoon also held a variety of different activities including a great raffle, vendors, face painting, music and entertainment. There was family fun and pets were welcome to visit, too. Mike Anderson, local musician/storyteller/dulcimer guy, was on hand to lead in a rendition of “Itsy Bitsy Spider”. Plus, there was the possibility of adoption that day, of course. Inside the shelter, P.A.W.S. volunteer Connie Powell received some quick licks and kisses from one of the rescued dogs; notice Connie is mostly a blur, as she is most probably in action, leaning in for the puppy love from Matt, who was adopted not a week after the event. From January 1 to July 23 of 2016, P.A.W.S. has saved 533 animals. One raffle winner at the Dog Gone Fun-Raiser, Glena Sims Wright, was chosen to win a $1,500 travel package. Lisa Jackson of P.A.W.S. noted on a Facebook post, “Might I add she also donated some back to paws. Thanks Glena (fellow animal lover).” Jackson added happily, “We’re going to be able to start replacing roofs with the funds!” The day was a success. Still, there are many animals that need a “fur-ever home.” If you are interested, please visit P.A.W.S. at 400 West Walnut Street in Jacksonville during their hours of 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., Friday through Sunday, or call at 217-243-7297. One hundred percent volunteer run, P.A.W.S. is a non-for-profit (501c3) animal rescue.
</oembed>
