The 49th annual Alsey Homecoming Picnic and Burgoo was held on Saturday, August 2. As always, the small Scott County community gathers together on the first Saturday in August for food, games, a pageant and entertainment. For many of the volunteers, getting ready for the big day starts the night before with the preparation of the burgoo. The dozen or more volunteers gather underneath the pavilion to have a few laughs and stir the burgoo.
Kettle service began on Saturday bright and early at 6:30 a.m. After bellies were full, folks started lining up for the parade at 10 a.m. Beth Johnson served as this year’s parade marshal. The lunch stands opened after the parade at 11 a.m., followed by music from Jacksonville’s “Dulcimer Guy,” Mike Anderson.
Then, came the glitz and glamour of the Miss Alsey pageant. The 2025 Alsey royalty includes 2025 Little Miss Lorelai Wingler, 2025 Junior Miss Alsey Rebecca Winningham and 2025 Miss Alsey Kenzie Jones. After the pageant, the homecoming committee drew for several prizes that were donated by several area businesses from the area. The committee also presented the Esther Award. The basis for the award is based on the Bible verse Esther 4:14. The recipient of this year’s award was chosen by the Miss Alsey pageant contestants. Tamara Galloway was chosen for her presence in the life of the contestants, her willingness to help others, her ability to calm fears, and always bringing her smile and kindness.
The homecoming committee says they are already in planning for next year’s event, which will mark its 50th anniversary.
