A new school resource officer will be roaming the halls of District 117 next school year.

Jacksonville Police Chief Tony Grootens says the JPD and District 117 Superintendent Steve Ptacek have concluded their selection process to fill the shoes of Officer Dave Melbourne, who is retiring in May.

Grootens says Officer Craig Wright was picked to serve as the next school resource officer.

“We picked Officer Wright for this position and I think he will do a wonderful job. I’m very proud of him getting that position,” says Grootens.

Wright has worked for the JPD for over a decade and Grootens feels he is an excellent candidate to take over for Melbourne.

“It’s going to be a learning curve for him, but he will be fine. He is very good with kids and I think he will be a good addition to the staff out there,” says Grootens.

Wright will be assigned to Jacksonville High School and Turner Junior High.
