Liana Hamm wins P.E.O. STAR Scholarship

Chapter CY, P.E.O., of Jacksonville, is pleased to announce that a young woman they recommended was selected to be the winner of a P.E.O. STAR Scholarship for the 2017-2018 academic year. The P.E.O Sisterhood is one of the largest community-based women’s organizations in North America, with almost 250,000 initiated members. The organization provides loans, grants and scholarships for women through its philanthropies. The P.E.O. Sisterhood is committed to helping women achieve their educational goals.

The STAR Scholarship is a highly competitive award, which recognizes young women who demonstrate outstanding leadership, academic achievement, extracurricular activities and community service. The one-time award of $2,500 is given to women in their senior year of high school who plan to pursue part-time or full-time post-secondary education.

Our award winner is Liana Hamm, daughter of Janet Hamm of Jacksonville. Miss Hamm attended a demanding online international high school where she earned a 4.0 unweighted GPA and was salutatorian of her class. She is a finalist for the National Merit Scholarship and has achieved superior scores on both the ACT and SAT tests.

Strong ties to the community led Liana Hamm to give back in many ways. She formed a summer youth chess club in Jacksonville and has offered her talents as an accomplished pianist to her church, where she has accompanied the children’s choir and played special music during worship services. Hamm has been a member of the Anchor Club, a philanthropic youth group in Jacksonville, and the Republican Women’s Club, where she served as secretary. She has worked for two political campaigns, and in 2016, participated in the Young Women’s Leadership Summit in Dallas, Texas. Hamm has volunteered as a tutor for high school students as well as an activities assistant at a local nursing home, and at Passavant Hospital. Hamm will be attending Rice University in Houston, Texas, majoring in economics.
