The Illinois State Fair, Greene County Fair and Brown County Fair have each been recently canceled. The Sangamon County Fair is postponed until October, at which point a Sangamon County Fair Fall Festival is being planned. According to sangcofair.com, “The Sangamon County Fair Board has planned a modified fair for October 2nd and 3rd of this year, which will include the Swyear Carnival, a Demolition Derby, great local bands in the Miller Pavilion, food vendors, a talent show, and general fair entries. We hope to salvage some aspect of a fair for you in October.” Along with these fairs and others in Illinois, the Morgan County Fair has also been forced to make some sort of decision because of the continuation of the COVID-19 pandemic. On June 12, Governor J.B. Pritzker signed Executive Order 2020-42, which states in part, “Section 1. During the duration of the Disaster Proclamations, the provision in the State Fair Act, 20 ILCS 210 ILCS/5, providing that the Department shall annually hold a State Fair at Springfield and DuQuoin is hereby suspended. The Department of Agriculture is directed to cancel the State Fairs scheduled for 2020 in accordance with this Executive Order.”
The latest local cancellation is the Morgan County Fair, whereas it was decided by vote of the Morgan County Fair Board to cancel the fair scheduled for July 5-12. The decision was made at their recent monthly meeting. The press release stated:
After weeks of earnest consultation with the local health department, 4-H Extension program, Local and State Leaders and fellow county fair boards, guidelines of the phased Restore Illinois plan do not allow a feasible option for this year’s event to be held.
“The cancellation of a tradition we are so passionate about was not easily decided,” said Jay Harris, Fair Board President. “The health and safety of our fairgoers is our responsibility and main concern; the Board as a whole felt this decision was in the best interest of our community.”
