Members of the City Church community hosted their annual Fun In the Son Car Show and Park Service on Sunday, Sept. 28 in Nichols Park.
The church family gathered near the Vietnam War Memorial and hosted an outdoor church service at 10 a.m. after all of the cars had arrived for 8 a.m. registration.
The car show had strong competition that date as both a car show in Beardstown and the Route 66 Car Show in Springfield were major draws. In all, approximately 24 vehicles registered. The smaller turnout fit nicely under the shade of the pine trees between the memorial and Nichols Park Pool.
Meanwhile, inside the Nichols Park Pavilion, attendees could grab hamburgers or hot dogs, chips, homemade treats and drinks. Just north of the pavilion, there were three bounce houses set up for children. Kids could also jump in on cane pole fishing in Morgan Lake. Some adults also got in on the angling action. All of the entertainment was provided at no charge to attendees.
Registration fees for the car show entrants as well as any collections from a donation box at the event are being donated to aid in payment of medical expenses for Marilyn Dichsen as she battles ovarian cancer.
“It’s hard to wrap my mind around all of the support that I’ve received,” Dichsen says. Dichsen, who is now in college, said that she has been blessed by the community who has supported her over the last year through donations, prayers and ongoing support.
