Story Walk on the Square
Cass-Morgan Agriculture in the Classroom is offering Story Walk on the Square this summer. For this last bit of July, enjoy “Tales of Dairy Godmother” by Viola Butler. Start in the northwest corner of the downtown square in Jacksonville and view a page of the book in business windows. As you walk around the square, you can scan the QR codes for more questions as you read the story.
For August, the book will be “Right This Very Minute” by Lisl H. Detlefsen. Read these stories as you combine family fun with ag literacy. Those participating can enter a drawing for a gift from Cass-Morgan Farm Bureau.
Dinner, presentation about Dr. GV Black to be held July 31
Join us as we wish a happy birthday to Dr. Greene Vardiman Black. All are invited to a celebration of Jacksonville’s “Hometown Dental Hero,” “The Father of Modern Dentistry.”
Presented by Dr. William W. Weller, the celebration will take place on Friday July 31 at 5 p.m. in the Hamilton’s Fireside Room, 110 N. East Street in Jacksonville.
Cost for non-dentists is $40. The event will begin with a cash bar, will include a prime rib dinner and birthday cake, and a special GV Black Exhibit preview across the street at the Jacksonville Area Museum. Many people are somewhat knowledgeable about Dr. Black, and others may have a vague sense of his importance.
The event will also include a presentation, which will describe Dr. Black’s life and connection to Jacksonville. It will share about his many astounding inventions, studies and contributions to worldwide dentistry as well as his evolution to becoming a “Legend in His Own Time!”

Morton Ave Misfits award scholarships
“This year, Morton Ave Misfits was proud to award two scholarships to local high school seniors. During the Downtown Car Show [in Jacksonville] in June, we were delighted to welcome scholarship recipient Noel Davidsmeyer, who joined us downtown to share his achievements and exciting plans for the future. Also honored was Jacob Stewart, who is not pictured. We wish them both the very best.

Your support makes it possible for us to fund these scholarships and provide assistance to families in need during the holiday season. Backpack giveaway at Verizon Wireless on July 26
Verizon authorized retailer, Round Room, LLC, is hosting its 14th annual “School Rocks Backpack Giveaway” event, during which hundreds of families are expected to line up to receive a free backpack. Occurring at more than 1,200 stores, Round Room will be giving over $3M worth of backpacks to students across the country.
The Verizon store, located at 1699 W. Morton Ave. in Jacksonville, is taking part.
With budget constraints being a challenge the for back-to-school shopping, many area Verizon Wireless stores will be giving away FREE backpacks on Sunday, July 26 at 1 p.m.
