There were two remembrance ceremonies last week in Jacksonville for the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on New York City.
The first ceremony, held under the pergola in downtown Jacksonville, had mostly members of the first responders community in attendance. The Chapel Pastor Perry Case brought a brief message and prayer while Isaiah Case sang “America the Beautiful.”
At 6 p.m., the Jacksonville AmVets Post 100 also held a ceremony. The Jacksonville Middle School Choir sang the “Star-Spangled Banner” and Pastor John McCorkle said prayers. A brief message was brought by AmVets Post 100 1st Vice Commander Laura Doss.
Doss recounted that on the day of Sept. 11, 2001, she was late for a class while attending MacMurray College and encountered the news of the terrorist attacks in New York City on a television in the Gamble Campus Center. Doss was also an active duty member of the Illinois Army National Guard at the time of the attacks.
Doss’ speech ended with a call for peace and understanding 24 years later.
