PRAIRIE COUNCIL ON AGING’s (PCOA) mission is to keep seniors in the community as long as possible, SAFELY, thru Social Service coordination. There are 4 large programs, the Community Care Program, Adult Protective Services, Nutrition (2) here and Information and Assistance. The Community Care Program or CCP places in home care aids and Emergency home response units into home of eligible and assessed seniors. Prairie Council investigates abuse of people with disabilities 18-59 and seniors in the community over 60 years old. Call 24/7 to report anonymously 1-866-800-1409.
There are 2 nutrition programs provided by Prairie Council, the Bread of Love and Doorbell Diners. Bread of Love is funded by the Area Agency on Aging, Lincolnland, Illinois Department on Aging and the Federal gov. PCOA covers Morgan, Cass and Scott counties and the food is catered by Hamilton’s. No senior turned away. Suggested Donation $4/meal. 11 sites serve Congregate (on Site) and well as Home delivered meals. Call for information 217-479-4619. The Doorbell Diner program is a private pay program for JACKSONVILLE only residents. Participants need a medically necessary, Dr. prescribed meal prepared by Passavant Area Hospital, a Memorial System Affiliate. The Church Woman United Group assures there are volunteers to deliver the meals. Each participant receives 2 meals Monday thru Friday for $4.30. Prairieland United way provides monetary help to those in need without income. Both programs have been around over 40 years. Prairie Council provides Information and assistance. This ranges from on line completion of Medicare part D and reduced license plate applications to sharing available services and resources. There is a second Prairie Council on Aging office in Carrollton.
PCOA has 2 major fundraising events, a year including the up coming SENIOR DAY EVENT. Please mark your calendars for October 23rd, 2017 at Hamilton’s, 110 East, Jacksonville, 10am-1pm. FREE to the public, over 40 vendors with information, a cooking demonstration, free health screenings and a lunch by reservation (Ham or BBQ chicken) – call 217-479-4619. The second fundraiser is THE COUNTY MARKET SWEEP. A lucky winner runs the isles of County market filling a cart with as much food as possible in 2 minutes. However there are 5 other winners of a $50 county market gift card. Look for this in February.
