South Jacksonville Elementary School held its first-ever STEAM night, an event focused on engaging students and their families in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math activities.
Organized by first-grade teachers Audra Nelson and Katie Headen, and supported by the entire school staff, the event drew enthusiastic participation from the school community.
Principal Braxton Stewart opened the evening in the gym following a performance by the Jacksonville Drumline Institute. A STEAM trailer provided by the Boy Scouts offered students and families an immersive experience as they explored a variety of engaging activities throughout the night. The Esprit de Corps Academy added to the event’s musical offerings, sharing music and instruments with attendees.
STEAM activities were set up in various classrooms across the school, including challenges such as “Float Your Boat,” where students built aluminum foil boats to see how many blocks they could hold, and “Help Harry,” which tasked students with constructing a tower to house a watchful guardian.
Other popular activities included “Bubble Painting” and building a balloon car from a water bottle. Students also had the chance to participate in “Blast Off,” where they built rockets to launch into outer space.
In addition to the activities, students received kids’ building kits provided by Home Depot and food coupons from Hardee’s. Popcorn was served in the gym, adding to the festive atmosphere.
Principal Stewart concluded the night by hosting a giveaway of three STEAM prizes to three lucky students. Overall, the event was a major success, providing an interactive and educational experience for students and families alike.
