Health with the Hamels : Wellness transformation begins with perspective

There is no ‘magic bullet’ to ‘fix’ health

By Justin and Clara Hamel

Imagine a pill or shot you could take that would instantly transform your health, a metaphorical magic bullet. It would revitalize your body, take away aches and pains, and restore vitality. It sounds too good to be true, probably because it is.

Today’s world is reliant on convenience. As a society we have grown accustomed to quick fixes and easy answers. Health and wellness have not been unscathed by the dependence on instant gratification. We expect a pill for every symptom, a salve for every ache. Many rely on quick meals barren of nutritional value. The meals are fast, cheap and filling, but devoid of vitamins and minerals. Wellness trends promising instant transformation abound. However, true wellness is not garnered so easily. It is a culmination of commitment and consistency. Health is less about quick relief and more about sustainable change.

The human body is incredibly resilient, but also complex and thus requires a multifaceted approach to health care. The primary tenets of health are no secret: a nutrient dense diet, a consistent sleep schedule, regular exercise and low stress. Each of these is equally important, as a nutrient dense diet will do little to diminish the detrimental health effects of rampant stress, and the benefits of a 30-minute run is easily negated when followed by a daily Big Mac and fries.

Unfortunately, the focus on fast, easy fixes often neglects the importance of these cornerstones for health. Instead of building a solid foundation of health, we paper over the cracks. Underlying issues are not addressed and long-term solutions are pushed aside for ease and convenience. It is how, as a nation, we have developed a reactive system of health in which we maintain mammoth per capita healthcare costs.

The transformation of wellness must begin with a shift in perspective. Healthcare must move from reaction to prevention and from symptom management to system balance. After all, true health care begins long before illness appears. It lies in the daily choices that support our body’s natural ability to heal. It is in choosing foods that nourish, movement that strengthens and restores, and practices that reduce stress and quiet the mind.

Once a foundation is established, it can be built on through therapies that promote the body’s natural healing cycle. Light, heat, cold and air can be powerful allies in restoring wellness and building resilience. When applied therapeutically, these essential elements of nature can support detoxification, decrease inflammation and restore vitality on a cellular level.

Imagine a vibrant, resilient body and mind capable of meeting life’s demands with energy and clarity. This can be the profound reward of listening to our bodies and intentionally reclaiming our health. No magic bullet exists for true wellness, the closest thing available is simply honoring the remarkable design of the human body and giving it the tools it needs to thrive.
